Before you can teach, you need to be well informed. Having sound knowledge of the issues at stake, the current laws and the benefits of marriage equality will go a long way in persuading others that separate is not equal. This section will guide you on how to tell your story to others and offer pointers for presenting persuasive positions while countering the arguments of the opposition. One of the fundamental rules in changing hearts and minds is to know your audience. The information in this section will help you direct your talking points and fine tune your positions so that they have the greatest impact on the particular listener. As with anything, passion and personal conviction are the most important tools you have in convincing others that equal rights are not something we can delay. We’d like to thank the Courage Campaign and Camp Obama for inspiring this section.

PERSONAL STORY
Personal Connection = Voter Action
When potential votes connect to activists who live and work in their neighborhood, they are more likely to feel connected to the issue and follow through on commitments to vote, volunteer or donate.
VOTER APATHY • Canvassing can increase voter turnout by 6% • Overcoming voter apathy is one of the biggest challenges to winning a campaign and canvassing is one of the best tools for achieving it. • Canvassing can provide the most relatable information to the voter for voting location, voting time and how to vote. • Voters vote when the probability their vote will affect the outcome implied by their reason for voting is greater than the effort required to vote. • Canvassing helps make it easy.

One of the main goals of an organizer is to motivate people to take action. People are motivated to act based on their values and values are the intersection of our emotions and our principles. Emotions dictate what we value in ourselves, in others and in the world.
Storytelling is a way to communicate your experience and to connect with the listener’s emotions.
Telling your Story of Self is an effective method to connect with people. This emotional connection is the key to motivating others to take action. That is why religious systems use stories to communicate their values and explain the traditions in their culture.
A Story of Self explains our purpose. To be most effective, we focus on two key points; moments in our lives when our values were formed and situations in which we have to make difficult choices in the face of great uncertainty. Thinking about the following questions can help you focus your story. What first motivated you to fight for marriage equality? When did you feel you had to do something about it? Why did you believe you could? What were the circumstances? What were the challenges?
