SIGNFOREQUALITY.COM LAUNCHES PETITION DRIVE TO REPEAL PROP 8

Activists Unveil Unique Social-Networking Tool to Support Signature Gathering Effort

(SACRAMENTO – November 16, 2009)

SignForEquality.com today launched a groundbreaking effort to gather signatures to repeal Proposition 8 and restore equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, marking the first time that social networking technology has been used to qualify a California initiative for the ballot.

“We’re taking names,” said John Henning, who is heading the SignForEquality.com effort as Executive Director of Love Honor Cherish. “SignForEquality.com will make history by using custom social networking tools, as well as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter, to support an all-volunteer signature drive to repeal Prop 8. People throughout California can now help us win marriage back by the simple act of signing and collecting signatures.”

Love Honor Cherish launched www.SignForEquality.com as part of the volunteer signature drive, which began today. The site features a downloadable petition form and training videos for signature gatherers, and uses unique social networking technology to help gatherers set goals, build teams, and find signature gathering events. “In its first day, SignForEquality.com is already the state of the art in California petition signature gathering,” said Henning.

From Reuters

SAN FRANCISCO - Gay marriage advocates on Monday launched a campaign to try to overturn California's same-sex marriage ban, hoping to become the first U.S. state to convince voters to approve gay people's right to wed.

In the five states where gay marriage is permitted -- Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont -- the right was achieved through court and legislative action.

In every state where the issue has been put before the voters, gay marriage has been rejected. Last year California passed its ban, known as Proposition 8, and voters in Maine overturned a state law allowing same-sex marriages two weeks ago.

From The Sacramento Bee

Supporters of legalizing same-sex marriage have launched an online signature-gathering campaign for putting an initiative to repeal Proposition 8 on the 2010 ballot.

The initiative, backed by a coalition called Love Honor Cherish, was approved for signature gathering today. Proponents must collect nearly 700,000 valid voter signatures by mid-April 2010 in order to ask voters to overturn Prop. 8, the 2008 ballot measure banning same sex marriage that passed with 52 percent of the vote

Organizers billed the new Web effort, www.SignForEquality.com, as the first time social networking has been used for an all-volunteer drive to qualify an initiative for the ballot. Visitors to the site can download petitions to sign, view volunteer training videos and connect with other volunteers and signature gathering efforts in their area.

From The Christian Science Monitor

LOS ANGELES - The battle is on to repeal California’s Prop. 8 — which activists hope starts a national domino effect in the nearly 30 states that have banned same-sex marriage.

A coalition of 40 groups has taken the first legal step for voters to be able to overturn the measure in November 2010. Thursday, the groups submitted ballot language that will place the measure on the ballot in the state’s next general election. Within weeks they intend to be canvassing the state to gather 700,000 valid signatures needed by April to qualify the measure for the ballot.

who we are

Love Honor Cherish was formed in May 2008 to fight for the right of same-sex couples to marry and to educate people about why that right is so important.

what we do now

Our focus is to change minds and gather signatures. Since the Supreme Court of California has upheld Prop 8, we must repeal it at the ballot box in November 2010. We’ll need one million signatures in 150 days to get it on the ballot. That’s a lot of work in a short amount of time.  We’ll all need to work together.

what you can do

It’s going to take the work of tens of thousands of Californians to win back the right to marry for same-sex couples. We need your help. If you’ve got a passion, it can be channeled. If you’ve got a skill, it can be used. To get involved, please join our mailing list.  You can also use this site as a resource to learn more about marriage equality issues and about the best way to explain their importance when you engage others on the subject.

FACT: Most research finds that happily married adults have lower blood pressure than singles with supportive social networks, suggesting marriage may literally be a matter of the heart. Married individuals seem to have lower rates of depressions and schizophrenias and handle stress and anxiety better.
